Parents Outraged Over Islamic Indoctrination

Parents of students who attend Spring Hill Middle School in Maury County, Tennessee are fuming mad about an assignment on Islam. Brandee Porterfield, the mother of a seventh-grader, said her daughter came home with papers that went well beyond a historical overview of world religion. “These belong to my daughter,” she said, presenting the assignment to a local news outlet. “They have studied Islam for three weeks, but skipped the whole chapter on Christianity because it’s not in the state standards.”

According to Porterfield – and school officials have not disputed her account – her daughter was forced to write out the Islamic creed pillar known as Shahada. As they translated this text to paper, they wrote out such disturbing tenets as “Allah is the only God.”

Porterfield is upset that her daughter is being taught the fundamentals of Islam while Christianity goes virtually unmentioned. “I have big problem with that. From a historical point of view, that’s a lot of history these kids are missing,” Porterfield said. “Also, for them to spend three weeks on Islam after having skipped Christianity, it seems to be that they are making a choice about which religion to discuss.”

Maury County Director of Schools Chris Marczak is trying desperately to put out the fire, but he seems unable to confront the specifics of the situation. Instead, he appears to be content spouting platitudes. “I encourage you to talk with your children, talk with your teachers, and talk with your principals. We are here to help your children be prepared for Life,” he said in a statement. He invited parents to meet with district authorities on September 17 to express their concerns about the class.

“My child was required to write ‘Allah is the only God’,” parent Joy Ellis said. “This is a seventh grade state standard, and will be on the TCAP. Christianity was completely skipped and is not a standard. I didn’t have a problem with the history of Islam being taught, but to go so far as to make my child write the Shahada is unacceptable.”

Strangely enough, the ACLU is nowhere to be found. Where are they? Their lawyers come rushing out of the woodwork every time a teacher says “bless you,” but they have absolutely nothing to say about this blatant violation of church and state? Strange.

Speaking of absences, where are all the atheist groups? They launch a campaign when they see a portrait of Jesus hanging in a high school hallway, but this isn’t interesting enough for their fanbase? So weird!

Perhaps the ACLU and the atheists are satisfied that writing “Allah is the only God” counts as history. Surely they would have nothing at all to say if a teacher made her history students memorize John 3:16, either.

Can you imagine?

Obviously, no one’s worried that this unit on Islam is going to convert a classroom-full of 7th graders. But then again, there’s not much chance of a Jesus picture converting Muslims. If we’re going to have these rules in place – if we’re going to demand complete and total secularization in our public schools – then it’s only fair that we treat all religions the same.

Even if they don’t really deserve to be treated the same at all.

I seek first the kingdom of Christ because everything else in this world is perishing. All that I have is from God who is always faithful. I have worked hard all my life and will continue as long as God lends me breath. The mistakes and bad judgments I made in my life all stemmed from me trying to work things out by myself. I have learned the hard way that the victory over all of my problems and the answers to all of my desires lie solely in my Savior, Jesus Christ. It is now my desire to share the words that God gives me to encourage and give hope to others who need the strength that only faith in Christ can give.
