A group of more than 1000 patriotic Americans just taught an important lesson to the precious, little college kiddos attending Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Just last week Hampshire College announced that the college would cease to fly the American flag after a series of disrespectful events took place on campus. First, the college rudely lowered the flag to half-mast to mark Donald Trump’s election victory. This was not only a disrespectful way to mark a perfectly legal election wherein more than 120 million Americans exercised their right to vote, it was a disgusting breach of flag etiquette as well. Then, on Veterans Day, school officials discovered the flag burned and destroyed. They replaced it and again set it at half-mast.
After the series of disturbing events, but particularly because of the flag burning, the school decided to remove the flag altogether. In explaining the reason for removing the flag from campus, college president Johnathan Lash told local news station WWLP, “It is a disrespect. That shouldn’t have happened in the first place.” So because of the students bad behavior and ignorant philosophical beliefs the flag that symbolizes our great nation should be removed from the campus?
The illogical response has been met with much incredulity.
Two members of the local community, who both seem to have a superior grasp of logic and reason to the folks at Hampshire College, explained different reasons for being outraged at the schools decision.
Christopher Benedetto of Ridgefield, Connecticut told WWLP, “They can be upset, but, they don’t have a lot to worry about. They’re going to a pretty nice school. I’m sure things are pretty good for them. They need to show it a different way, basically.”
Shamtum Jha, of Amherst College, Massachusetts, “Well, to be honest, the flag should not have been lowered in the first place, because that just shows outright intolerance for what has happened.”
More than a thousand area residents agreed that the college needed to rectify the situation and on Sunday those patriots gathered at Hampshire College to protest the school’s decision.
The gathered patriotic Americans had one message in particular to convey to the college students who had chosen to spit in the face of their freedom to dissent.
Freedom is not free. That’s the lesson that hundreds of veterans, their families and friends and other local residents hoped to teach students at Hampshire College Sunday afternoon.
Jerry Maguire, Veteran said, “They took down my flag, they have a right to that, I’m here to defend their right to do that but I want them to understand how bad that hurts me.”
Hundreds gathered to show their support of the American flag and what it stands for after the College removed the flag on campus earlier this week following the presidential election results. A decision by the college that outraged many.
Remember when college students used to protest for real, positive change? Like the “Free Tibet” movement? Or the fight against apartheid? Instead, today’s students protest the American flag because… “white privilege,” “the wealth gap,” “the 1%,” and other ridiculously fallacious reasons. This latest example is just the most recent in a long line of stupid college behavior.
