Former chairperson of the Democrat National Committee, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), has fallen far from where she used to sit atop the party structure.
Her decline began when her party started to realize that she was wholly incompetent and completely unsuited for leadership. Her interviews on cable news outlets and in the mainstream press were filled with gaffes, inane remarks, and completely illogical statements. The Party seemed willing to abide her incompetence, but then came the 2016 presidential primary race. Wasserman Schultz was caught using the DNC’s supposedly neutral position to put her thumb on the scale and ensure that Hillary Clinton won the nomination. She and other members of the DNC were caught working against the other candidates on multiple occasions, and when caught they offered no serious defense of their activities. The party base was furious, there was even a class action lawsuit against the DNC, and Wasserman Schutlz was forced to step down.
However, all of that underhanded drama pales in comparison to what may lie ahead for Wasserman Schultz, who continues to stand at the middle of a criminal case that includes bank fraud, and making false statements to authorities, but could soon also include espionage and treason.
For months Wasserman Schultz has been dealing with the ongoing scandal of having hired a corrupt IT team that was surreptitiously stealing classified information from Congress, then she worked to get that team hired on around Capitol Hill, and finally she refused to fire them even after authorities had accused them of committing some very serious felonies.
Soon we learned that the IT Team led by Imran Awan was getting paid for work that they weren’t doing (with taxpayer dollars), and that they had very disconcerting connections with shady characters overseas. Finally, when everyone else had fired Awan and his team, Wasserman Schultz refused to do so. While Wasserman Schultz claimed that it was because she didn’t want to prejudge Awan, others wondered if something more sinister was at play. Now it’s beginning to seem as if there was.
The laptop that authorities discovered holding some of the most important information in the case, was actually left for them in a very curious manner.
U.S. Capitol Police found the laptop after midnight April 6, 2017, in the tiny room that formerly served as a phone booth in the Rayburn House Office Building, as a Capitol Police report stated. The laptop was accompanied by a Pakistani ID card, copies of Awan’s driver’s license and congressional ID badge, and letters to the U.S. attorney. A notebook found with the laptop had notes regarding “attorney-client privilege.”
As The Daily Caller pointed out, the room where the laptop was found is “a place Awan would have had no reason to go because Wasserman Schultz’s office is in the Longworth building and the other members who employed him had fired him.”
Leaving important items there accidentally would seem extremely unlikely, according to Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, former prosecutor, and member of the House Judiciary Committee.
“Imran Awan is a calculating person who made great efforts to cover his tracks, both electronically and physically,” Gohmert told TheDCNF. “Placing that laptop with his personal documents, which may well incriminate him, those he worked for, or both, in the dead of night in a House office building, was a deliberate act by a cunning suspect, and it needs to be investigated.”
This is the same laptop that Wasserman Schultz spent weeks harassing Capitol Police about. Her fury climaxed in a heavily publicized episode where she was recorded threatening the Capitol police chief, if he continued to refuse to give the laptop back to her.
This story continues to move in surprising and troubling ways, but each new twist seems to bring more doubt and suspicion down on Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
