NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — You give him a mic, and he’ll speak his mind.
Phil Robertson, the patriarch of “Duck Dynasty” fame, received the Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award at the 2015 Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday.
It’s an award Robertson said shouldn’t even have to exist.
“All of us should be able to speak freely without having to be awarded for it,” Robertson told the assembled crowd.
He then proceeded to speak very, very freely.
“Carry your Bible with you and your woman,” Robertson advised Republican candidates, before labeling sexually transmitted diseases the “revenge of the hippies.”
“You want a medically safe [sexual] option?” he said. “One man, one woman, married for life.”
“You lose your religion, according to John Adams, and there goes your morality,” Robertson said. “We’re almost there. I hate to admit I got my facts from the CDC the day before yesterday — 110 million, 110 million Americans now have a sexually transmitted illness.”
He added, “I’m trying to help you, for crying out loud, America!”
Robertson took the stage after CPAC experienced a series of delays and schedule changes on Friday, and many in the packed ballroom were waiting to see the pushed-back, controversial appearance of Republican 2016 frontrunner Jeb Bush.
But Robertson took his sweet time speaking, even joking a few times about how much time he had left.
Robertson’s overlong speech left Bush tapping his toes…
…and after numerous signals to wrap up…
…Robertson finally ceded the stage when the organizers started playing music.
