The sad odyssey of baby Charlie Gard and his family has captivated the planet, and now President Donald Trump is stepping into the story.

Last week we told you that baby Charlie was sick and preparing to die in a British hospital. His parents had only one more option and that was to spirit Charlie to a hospital in America where an experimental treatment was in trial. The parents asked the hospital to release them so they could take Charlie to America for treatment in a last-ditch effort to save his life. The hospital said no. Charlie’s parents took the hospital to court, and lost. Then they appealed, higher and higher they climbed but each new court ruled that their son would die because the hospital had commanded it.

Gard is critically ill due to a mitochondrial disease, and his parents wish to bring him to the United States for a trial therapy. However, European courts of human rights have declined the parents’ request to move their child because doctors don’t believe the experimental treatment will help Gard.

The hospitals now have the right to end life-sustaining treatment for Gard against the wishes of the parents.

Charlie’s parents had raised over $1.5 Million and had proven that Charlie wouldn’t be a burden to Britain’s socialist healthcare system because they could pay for private treatment. But still… the hospital said “no.” Charlie’s parents are being forced to watch as their son is executed by the hospital that was supposed to heal him. Even worse, there is hope. The experimental treatment in America could save their son’s life… but still the hospital refuses.

Now President Trump is stepping into the debate and offering any help that the United States can provide.

From White House press pool:

“If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so,” Trump posted.
Helen Ferre, director of media affairs at the White House, said Monday, “Upon learning of baby Charlie Gard’s situation, President Trump has offered to help the family in this heartbreaking situation. Although the President himself has not spoken to the family, he does not want to pressure them in any way, members of the administration have spoken to the family in calls facilitated by the British government. The President is just trying to be helpful if at all possible.”

As we wrote last week, this is what happens when a nation embraces socialized healthcare. Why? Because, when the healthcare system (government through taxpayers) is funding healthcare, the system must make difficult decisions with limited funding. This means that some patients must be given up on, because other patients with a better prognosis would be a better, safer use of the limited resources. So in Charlie’s case, where the likelihood is that he won’t survive, the healthcare system says it’s time for him to die so we don’t have to spend more money on him.

That’s the cold, brutal reality of socialized medicine. It’s why Republicans warned about “death panels” during the debate over Obamacare. The death panels are a very real, very important part of socialized healthcare.

Here’s hoping that the hospital relents and allows Charlie’s family to bring him to the United States. Every parent should have the opportunity to do whatever they can to protect their children.
