The Cowardice of Wendy Davis

Wendy Davis, a Democratic state senator running to replace Rick Perry as governor of Texas, owes her political stardom to two things: a pair of pink sneakers and her unstinting support for a woman’s right to terminate a late-term pregnancy in a substandard clinic. Yay, feminism!

Last year, Davis led an eleven-hour filibuster — that’s where the sneakers came in handy — to block legislation that would ban abortion after 20 weeks and require abortion clinics to meet the same standards that hospital-style surgical centers do.

This was all going on against the backdrop of the sensational Kermit Gosnell case in Pennsylvania. Gosnell ran a bloody, filthy “clinic” where he performed late-term abortions with a barbarity you’d expect to find in a Saw movie. Sometimes he’d “snip” the spines of fully-delivered babies with a pair of scissors. His instruments were so unsanitary that some women got STDs from them. Cat feces was a common sight on the procedure-room floors.

In short, you didn’t need to be an abortion-rights activist to find the story of interest, but you’d certainly expect an activist to be up to speed on it.

Working on that theory, The Weekly Standard’s John McCormack caught up with Davis last August to ask her a few questions.

McCormack noted that once you got past the squalor and filth of the clinic, Gosnell’s illegal late-term abortions weren’t all that different from legal late-term abortions in other states. “What is the difference . . . ,” McCormack asked, “between legal abortion at 23 weeks and what Gosnell did? Do you see a distinction between those two [acts]?”

“I don’t know what happened in the Gosnell case,” Davis replied. “But I do know that it happened in an ambulatory surgical center. And in Texas changing our clinics to that standard obviously isn’t going to make a difference.”

She should have stopped with “I don’t know what happened in the Gosnell case” — because in the words of the grand-jury report, the “abhorrent conditions and practices inside Gosnell’s clinic [were] directly attributable to the Pennsylvania Health Department’s refusal to treat abortion clinics as ambulatory surgical facilities.”

So the one thing she claimed to know wasn’t true. Also, what curious incuriosity. If you were suddenly a national leader on an issue you felt passionately about, wouldn’t you want to know what happened in a case that cuts to the heart of your cause?

Not Davis. Her time is better spent denouncing the ignorance of women who disagree with her. When McCormack asked what to make of the fact that a majority of American women support a ban on late-term abortions, Davis responded, “I again think that a lot of people don’t really understand the landscape of what’s happening in that arena today.”

Think about that. In the course of a short conversation, she revealed that she didn’t know what she was talking about while casually dismissing the majority of American women who disagreed with her as not knowing what they’re talking about.

Let’s fast-forward to 2014. Davis was recently interviewed by Jorge Ramos of Fusion TV. He asked her, “When does life start? When does a human being become one?”

Davis answered with a non-answer: “You know, the Supreme Court of course has answered this decision, in terms of what our protections are.” Blah blah blah.

Tom Bevan of RealClearPolitics slammed Davis for being “too cowardly to give a straight answer, let alone a thoughtful one, to a straightforward question that goes to the heart of a matter she has made the signature issue of her political life.”

I agree. But Davis is merely at the forefront of the cowardice epidemic. On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade earlier this month, President Obama couldn’t bring himself to say the word “abortion,” preferring instead virtually every poll-tested buzzword. Indeed, in all of the “war on women” noise, abortion is almost always wrapped in the velvety euphemisms of “women’s health” and “reproductive choice.”

It should tell you something when passionate advocates of unrestricted abortion are so uncomfortable talking about . . . abortion.

Perhaps all of the rage abortion extremists aim at their opponents is cover for a deep insecurity — maybe psychological, definitely political — about the reality of what they are defending. Senator Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.) once said that life begins “when you bring your baby home” from the hospital. That is not very far from Wendy Davis’s position. But she doesn’t want to say that — certainly not in Texas! Better to change the subject to the evils of her opponents and — hey — have you seen my sneakers?

I seek first the kingdom of Christ because everything else in this world is perishing. All that I have is from God who is always faithful. I have worked hard all my life and will continue as long as God lends me breath. The mistakes and bad judgments I made in my life all stemmed from me trying to work things out by myself. I have learned the hard way that the victory over all of my problems and the answers to all of my desires lie solely in my Savior, Jesus Christ.

It is now my desire to share the words that God gives me to encourage and give hope to others who need the strength that only faith in Christ can give.

Cold War Vet, she stood up and filibustered for all those hours so that woman can abort babies after 20 weeks. God will not be mocked. She not only put more unborn babies to death with her actions, she went against a holy God who is the Creator of life! She will face judgment that will worse than what she did for the cause of abortion.

      1. How incredibly “pro-life” of you, wishing harm upon pro-choicers. I guess you only care about the lives of fetuses, and all other lives don’t matter one bit to you, huh?

        1. Post

quietdove: You are certainly a study in contradiction. You are all over the board with foolish arguments that say nothing. First of all, you didn’t deal with even one of the points I made in my response. And you say that I give Christianity a bad name? Why is that, because YOU don’t agree with me or the word of God? You certainly have no knowledge of God for you to say what you did in your comments. I never said that he hates certain people but I did say that people will face judgment for their sinful acts. Of course IF you ever read anything in the bible you would see that for yourself. Jesus talked about the lake of fire. What did you think he was referring to? He spoke of the place where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. That is the place prepared for those who choose to live their life like they want to instead of following his ways. If you don’t agree with him or his word, I would say you have big problems. If you don’t see anything wrong with suctioning and ripping a living fetus out of a womb, I would say your mind is seared and you don’t know the truth. Why don’t you read the bible and let’s reason from it. You don’t have to believe me. I am not the one who is going to judge you. You have a choice and you can do what you want ..for now. The love of God will forgive and take back anyone who repents of their sin and turns from it. No matter what you have ever done, he will forgive if you repent. The judgment of God will punish those who don’t. If you reject him now, you will suffer the consequences. You don’t have to believe me, read the bible! Or if you just don’t care and want to make up a god who fits your agenda, see if that works for you. It’s your choice. Did you forget that God brought a flood to destroy the world when wickedness was filling the earth? Did you forget that God totally destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their sinful perversion? God is just. Read your bible.

Next you go into a definition of compassionate. Honestly, it would be laughable if it were not so sad that you actually quoted compassion as being sympathetic consciousness of others distress together with desire to alleviate it. Are you for real? In that definition, tell me how that helps the unborn child that you so uncompassionately want to kill?? So it seems that you are advocating the belief that the end justifies the means. If you have to kill someone in order to feel better, that is okay because in the end, I will feel better. What a selfish, self-centered thought that is. Shame on you. That kind of thinking is why this country is in a downward spiral!

Then you go on to describe certain pregnancy complications that can happen. In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg does not plant in the uterus so it will probably not survive. They will have to perform surgery. What does that have to do with your argument for abortion? Hyperemesis gravidarum can usually be alleviated with medication. What does that have to do with your argument for abortion? Complications can happen with any procedure even if you get your teeth cleaned. What point are you trying to make?? You are ridiculous. So your answer is that a woman can get over killing her baby better than if she gave it up for adoption. You feel she is going to be forever scarred emotionally to know her child is cared for in a loving adoptive family but that she can live with ripping the innocent child out of her womb and ending its life? I am just asking you because I am unclear on your points, is this what you really believe? The truth is you are using every excuse under the sky to justify sin. The bible says there is a way that seems right to a man but in the end it leads to death.(Proverbs 16:25) You better check to see if you are on that road that seems right but will destroy you. Never make excuses for sin. That is what the devil does. I am sure you don’t want to emulate him.

You don’t have to believe a word I said here, that is your choice. But I hope you pray about it and I hope you ready your bible and find out for yourself. Remember, Jesus never condoned sin. He forgave those who came to him but he didn’t condone sin. For that reason they killed him. Darkness hates the light. You don’t have to like me. What I am giving you is truth. It is up to you to believe or not. You said I only care about the life of a fetus and no one else. You are wrong. I care about all who are on that path of destruction with thoughts like you have. I am holding out the truth so that you might turn from your ways because I care. I can’t make you accept the truth. I can only pray for you.

    2. You know, people like you, who use God as a weapon of sorts, give Christianity a bad name. God is not a tool of hatred to be used against those who have different views than you do. According to many Christians, God is all-loving. And it’s a complete paradox to say that God is both all-loving and that he hates certain people and will inflict judgment on those people. So why not just admit that you don’t think that God is all-loving, and why not admit that you’re using him as a tool of hatred?

      1. Dove it’s really simple, “Thou Shalt not “Murder”. God Himself said that. What’s so difficult to understand about that? It’s not about having a “different view” it’s about taking God for His Word. There is “no” excuse to murder an innocent fetus who didn’t ask to be born. The person makes the decision. If you can’t afford the baby, offer it a chance to live through adoption. I am “not politically correct”, nor will I ever be. If you condone it, in the eyes of God you are just as culpable. On Judgement day, many will have to give account for this. People are quick to forget that the same loving God is also a “consuming fire”, who hates sin.

        1. Post

Well said, Cold War Vet. quietdove is not so quiet when it comes to demanding her rights to abortion! She has no idea that taking the life of an unborn child is an abomination to God. She thinks I am rude for saying that. She needs to read the bible.

  1. Why do you anti-choicers keep mentioning Gosnell, and ignoring the fact that he was a random madman? The large majority of doctors and nurses who work in an abortion clinic are nothing like Gosnell. Have you ever actually visited an abortion clinic and talked to the people who work there? Something tells me you haven’t. After all, you don’t seem to be interested in the actual facts regarding abortion.

    1. Post

quietdove, the anti-choicer is YOU not me. What choice do you give the living child in the womb? Gosnell is the worst of the worst but I hardly find it comforting that the “wonderful” people at the abortion clinic suction and rip the child from the womb in a nice way! The DNA, the sex of the child and everything about her or Him has been set at the point of impact of the sperm and egg. But you suddenly feel you have a right to what is in your body. You should have thought about that before you had sex. Killing over 55,000,000 unborn babies has become a plague to this country. The fact that the reprobate mind of Wendy Davis would lead her to filibuster for hours to impede the vote that would disallow abortion after 20 weeks is simply the most egregious act of evil she could have done. By the way, at that stage, the fetus could live outside of the womb. Life means nothing to pro-choicers. They are self-centered people who care only about themselves. They will face God one day and explain why they thought that it was okay to kill the innocent child he created. As far as knowing about abortion clinics and the people who work there and the actual facts? I have first hand knowledge of it all. You lost that bet. I am sure you are so proud of yourself that you are fighting for the right to suction, rip and even drill a hole in the head of an unborn, unwanted child to kill him or her. What a humanitarian you are. It makes me sick.

      1. You know, your attitude on abortion is not compassionate in the least. I mean, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines “compassion” as “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.” Not only are you not sympathetic to the distress of a woman with an unplanned pregnancy, but if she knows that getting an abortion would alleviate her distress, you don’t care, which is entirely uncompassionate of you. So are you okay with the fact that you’re uncompassionate?

Also, ddo you know what hyperemesis gravidarum, pre-eclampsia, and ectopic pregnancies are? Do you know how physically hellish pregnancy can be for a woman? Do you know all of the different ways that pregnancy can cause mental and emotional distress to a woman? Do you know how emotionally scarring it can be to give a child up for adoption? Or do you just not care about any of that, which further proves that your views on this issue are incredibly hateful?

Also, since when is selfishness always a bad thing? I mean, everyone is selfish sometimes, even you. Putting oneself (and one’s well-being) first is a natural, normal part of being human. It’s how we keep ourselves alive and thriving. So why do you seem to think it’s okay for you to be selfish sometimes, but it’s not okay for a pregnant woman to ever be selfish? Why hold pregnant women to different standards than you hold yourself to?

  2. Abortion is what it is, murder plain and simple. It’s a fact. There is no way around it, you may try to sugar coat it, twist the facts, but it still comes out as murder of the most innocent.

Let’s look at one of the reasons for abortion: To alleviate the pain and suffering of the mother. Hmmm…

So lets kill innocent babies so that the mothers can feel good about themselves. That makes perfect sense. NOT!

Does anyone actually believe that the mother feels so much better after murdering her child? No more pain, no more suffering?!

The problem with the world today is a moral and ethical decline in society. Abortion is at the top of the list. Another problem is “self”. Give me this, give me that, I want this, I want that. We need to think of others before ourselves, including unborn babies. We need to be loving, kind, thoughtful, forgiving and have mercy. Killing of the innocent is not included in that list.

God help us! Forgive us for what we have done! I pray for the lost innocent lives, the lost souls who know not which way to turn for help. We need your light, your grace, and your mercy! Please hear our prayers. Amen

    1. Post

Amen, Gordon. You said it all very well. I also pray for God’s forgiveness for what we have done to innocent lives through abortion. Sadly, I was deceived at one time and at that time I also believed that abortion was a “right”. May God forgive me. I am so grateful that he sent others to show me that I was sinfully wrong. I thank him that he opened my eyes to the truth.
