Replacement theology or otherwise known as supersessionism has been taught in the church for the past two thousand years. This type of theology is not only damaging to the church but also has no merit biblically. So what is replacement theology and how did it come about. Historically Jews and gentile believers in Yeshua would gather together, mostly in homes throughout Israel and the diaspora or dispersed areas and worship together. This was after the resurrection and ascension of Yeshua, and large numbers of believers would come together in worship, largely due to the apostle Rabbi Sh’aul and his work in the surrounding areas of Israel. As the numbers grew congregations or bodies of the Messiah would form. During the first century it is estimated that there were over 100,000 Jewish believers in Yeshua as LORD. We often do not think that there were this many Jewish followers. We have read in Acts that on the day of Pentecost alone that 3000 came to believe. The gift of the Ruach HaKodesh or Holy Spirit was upon Peter and the others and that is why 3000 who were from many areas and spoke many languages all understood what was being spoken and came to believe. The book of Acts chapter 21 reveals that there were tens of thousands of believers meeting in houses. I believe that this is what the LORD intended, for both Jew and gentile to worship together thus having one congregation of believers in unity worshipping together in spirit and truth and love. However due to various circumstances and comments of popular and powerful men there formed a schism between Jew and gentile which still rears it ugly head to this day. For instance every time the was a revolt by the Jews for harsh treatment by the Romans, the Romans would punish the Jews and those who were associating with them would often feel the weight of the punishment and distance themselves from the Jewish believers. The Bar Kochba revolt around 135 C.E. and the writings of Justin Martyrs “Dialogue with Trypho the Jew” circulated around 150 C.E. both added to the division of Jew and gentile worshipping together. Justin Martyrs writings began the case for a “New Israel” based on the fact that many Jews rejected Yeshua as Messiah and so logically the gentiles should be considered to replace the Israel of old. The result of this began a consistent and increasingly hostile attitude towards the Jews and all things Jewish. Never mind that the both the Old and New Testament was written almost entirely by Jews.
Marcion, a rich man and a son of a bishop further added to the anti-Hebrew sentiment by publicly claiming that the New Testament was the result of a new teaching revealed by God the Father, Yeshua the Son and The Holy Spirit, whereas the Old Testament was a revelation of a lesser, more distant God. Accordingly then anything related to the Old Testament or Jewish practices were inferior to the New Testament teachings. Other though leaders of the time added to this sentiment often referring to Jews as pigs and lesser creatures then gentile believers. This type of thought all added to what we now call replacement theology, the Church has replaced Israel and all things Jewish, and therefore the claim that the Jews were no longer a valid people group grew and prospered. This anti-semitism has continued through the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and even the eventual comments by the well known leader of the Reformation, Martin Luther. Many believe that it was Luther’s writings that influenced Hitler and his hatred for the Jews. Anti- semitism spread throughout much of Europe and Jews were constantly being blamed for many horrible events including the black plague.
Today many Churches continue to believe in this false and harmful doctrine. There is no biblical basis for replacement theology, it is without a doubt a satanic thought that has been prolonged throughout history and must be corrected. It is simply a lie. There is not one place in the bible where God determined that He was through with the Jews and that they have been replaced. Consider Romans 11:25 written by Rabbi Sh’ual, “For , brothers, I want you to understand this truth which God formerly concealed but has now revealed, so that you won’t imagine you know more than you actually do. It is the stoniness, to a degree, has come upon Israel until the Gentile world enters in its fullness; and that it is in this way that all Israel will be saved.” Add to this Romans 11:29, “for Gods free gifts and His calling are irrevocable.” What Rabbi Sh’ual was saying is that the rejection of Yeshua as Messiah by Israel is temporary and that it is now incumbent upon the gentile believers to work for the salvation of all Israel because God’s calling is irrevocable, it will never change. All Israel will be saved, they have never been replaced by the church, or by gentile believers. The anti-semitism of the past 2000 years has only propagated a lie and a deception that needs to be rectified. The church must repent of this deception and love on their Jewish brethren for that is what the Good News is all about. Replacement theology is man made, unbiblical and harmful. The truth must to taught and the church must work to undo the anti-Semitism that has caused this division between Jew and gentile. We must become the one new man Yeshua desires for us to be. One new man, one people all like-minded, united in Messiah.
I call for a reformation to take place within the church. This must happen for all Israel to be saved whereupon the return of Yeshua can occur. For it was Yeshua himself that proclaimed in Matthew 23:29 :For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Yeshua was talking to the Jews, about the Jews. Israel must come to the knowledge that their savior had come and will return, but next time they must know Him. This can only occur when the church comes into its fullness. In other words the church must become the vessel to the Jews so they would come to know their Messiah. This supernatural event can occur and will occur when God the Father appoints the time for it. Meanwhile we can work to deny replacement theology and replace it with the truth, for this is Gods Kingdom where there is no room for deception and lies.
