The Chosen People

The Olive Branch Report FEATURED ARTICLES, SUPPORT ISRAEL 17 Comments

The Jewish people have been called God’s Chosen people throughout biblical times and this tag is even carried today by Jews. So why did God choose the Jews, and what were they chosen for? In Deuteronomy 7:6-8 we read:

“For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen (bachar-to chose, elect, decide for)  you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession
The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all people
But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” CJB
God chose the Hebrew people because He always keeps His promises, and as we see here God is keeping the oath He made with the ancestors of the Hebrew people, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They were not a mighty people, they were outnumbered by many other tribes God could have chosen, but it would have been out of God’s character to go against an oath He swore. God loved the Hebrews and and saved them from 400 years of brutal slavery. God still loves the Jewish people.  If God is the same yesterday, as He is today, and as He will be tomorrow, then it must be so that God still loves the Jews. That is why the Jewish Nation of Israel, including the Jews not living in the land of Israel still play a significant role in end time prophecy. But what were the Jewish people chosen for? If they were not chosen for their might or because they were great in number then surely God had a plan for the Jewish people.
For one the Jews were chosen to be set apart as a holy people, a nation that would be Gods  priests (cohanim). We read this in Exodus 19:6. God chose the Jews for two reasons according to this scripture, to set them apart from all the other nations, and to make them a kingdom of priests that would represent the very word of God for the world. These are certainly worthy reasons to be chosen by God to carry out. We know however that the Jews did not fare well in either of these categories, they often went away from God and His commandments and many of the Jewish people have failed to understand their role as a kingdom of priests. However, this may change one day and in fact it is already changing as more Jews are learning who their true Messiah is, Yeshua HaMassiach. But there is even a better reason as to what the Jews were chosen for, that was to bring the Jewish Messiah into the world, in His human form. Now this is a big deal, God used the Jewish people to fulfill His word that a Messiah would come, this has been prophesied throughout  all of the Old Testament. But God did not just bring Yeshua for the Jewish people only but as King of King and LORD of LORDS for all nations, a covenant made with Abraham, the father of all nations.
God chose the Jews, set them apart as holy and delivered the savior of the world, born as a Jew to Jewish earthly parents. Moses spoke of this in Deuteronomy 18:15 and this promised Messiah was indeed raised up from Jewish lineage. The prophets Isaiah, Daniel, Micah, and the Psalms all spoke of a coming Messiah.
This is what the Hebrew people were chosen to do. This is why today we must do all we can as true believers to witness to Jewish people. They must come to know their Messiah, a Jewish Messiah. Why? Because the only way to true salvation is to accept Yeshua as Lord and savior. Many of my brethren do not know their Messiah, they are still waiting for the Messiah to come the first time. They only know Jesus as the Christian God. This has been taught to them as it was taught to me, by my parents and by our Rabbi’s. Most Jews do not even know what the Old Testament, the Hebrew scriptures speak of. That is why I will dedicate much of what I write to witnessing to Jews, which is very different from witnessing to non-Jews. But for now please pray for my people that the scales will fall from their eyes, that their ears would be opened to hear and that mostly their hearts would be open to believe. God bless you all.

Thank you so much for this post. I guess I never thought about what the Jewish people believed about Jesus. I knew that they didn’t think he was the Messiah, but I’m so busy thinking and knowing that we are connected to them, and we came from them. We are grafted in to the Jewish roots, that I didn’t think they might look at Jesus as ‘our’ God. Thank you. I pray daily for Israel and the Jewish people. They are the chosen of God, as you say. I will continue to pray for their eyes to open, and open their arms wide to accept their Messiah. Many Blessings to you.

I will try to bring a unique viewpoint because I come from a unique background. I pray that God uses me to open eyes, and hearts towards unsaved Jews, where I was for many years. Thank the LORD that He revealed Himself to me and I accepted His invitation.

You bring up a great point, most people do not understand the mindset of Jewish people and what we have been taught and experienced for two thousand years. Thank you for praying for the Jewish people and Israel. What a blessing to pray for the salvation of a nation. God bless.

YES! This is so true. I have written about this same thing. The Jews are God’s chosen people and the land of Israel itself is His. So many do not understand this.
Because the Jews largely ignored Christ and had a hand in His death, and the fact that we have the New Testament covenant through Christ…they believe the Jewish people are no longer chosen. This belief is so unbiblical…NOwhere in the Bible did God ever say the Jews were no longer His people, in fact Scripture tells us He said the opposite…the Jewish people will be and are His forever.

The Gentile believers need to embrace the Jewish people as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. The Jews were the original branches on the vine.

Thank you for a great article, I hope many read it and learn from it.
    God bless

Thank you for your comments. Although I may be part of God’s Chosen people I want to make it clear, as God has made this clear the Jew and Gentile are alike and God loves both the original branches and those grafted in. What is important is that whatever the branch, we bear fruit, good fruit for the Kingdom of God is at hand.

Yes the time has come, and time is short so we must all band together for the Jewish people and nation to learn who their true Messiah is. Thank you for your comment. God Bless.

Great teaching, Rabbi Eric! I have always had a burden for Jewish people to know, even before Christ comes, that he is the their Lord and Savior and the One they have been waiting for all along. Messianic Jews, such as yourself, Rabbi, are indeed blessed and used by God. Thank you for sharing this wonderful message of truth.

    1. Rabbi Eric @ HOJ

Thank you for sharing your heart for Jewish people to know their Messiah. My ministry is to bring the truth to both Jew and Gentile, as we are One New Man in Messiah.

  4. Mrs. CJB

My prayer partner and I pray for Israel and all the Jewish people each weekl. We pray for a mighty outpouring of God’s spirit upon them in particular along with revival in America and the world. We must pray without ceasing. I Bless You, Rabbi Eric, in Yeshua’s precious name!

    1. Rabbi Eric @ HOJ

Thank you brother for joining me in praying for Israel and America. Indeed we need an outpouring like what was seen at Pentecost. May all come to see Yeshua as Messiah and may God keep peace in His land. God bless you.

Dear Rabbi Eric, I am your “Sister” in Yeshua but I love you just the same! My son’s name is Eric also – “Mrs. CJB” (see your comment above.

I believe the Jews are still the chosen people. I also believe part of the problem of them not understanding Y’Shua as Messiach better is because from even the first century the church seems to have transformed from Hebrew to Greek in nature/culture. The church needs to transform itself back into Hebrew culture as Hebrew is spiritual/esoteric and Greek is thought/tangible based. Y’Shua HaMessiach was never called Jesus Christ, never celebrated the pagan holidays of Christmas & Easter & even Valentines Day, with all the graven images of Santa Claus, bunnies, and cupids. Y’Shua celebrated the feasts of Israel, which all proclaim Himself. He id not meet in a corporate structured church run by a pastor acting as CEO of a corporation, but Temple with prophets & priests. We need to leave behind our Christianese, stop calling ourselves Christians and adopt the language of our adopted heritage. We are believers in Y’Shua. Our entire American culture is very Greek, replete with our graven images from the mountains of culture, i.e. the entertainment mountain of Hollywood has it’s golden statue of Oscar. This is no different than the idols on the high places in the days of old. We trust in government, health care, green paper money, etc. rather than true provision from Elohim. Corporate churches beg for money & build large & sprawling campuses. It’s all very tangible materialism. As we return to our adopted heritage, being Hebrews, we will be the examples of Y’Shua to the Hebrews, speaking in their language, we can hopefully lead the way to Him.

Judy, I agree that we need to get back to our Hebrew culture, especially if we want to reach the Jewish people with the message of Yeshua as our Messiah. The Old Testament is a great way to reach the Jewish people as they consider that there book. And yes Greek culture was very different then Hebrew culture and it did indeed effect the way the bible was interpreted. Our culture is certainly turned from Elohim and we have become a culture that worships many idols. America is treading on dangerous waters with ADONAI. Judgement will come as it always does but He is full of grace and mercy so we can turn this around. Let us begin the process as you say, getting back to our roots and original heritage. God bless you.
