Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last week or so, you’ve noticed the ugly behavior that the left has been hurling at members of the Trump administration and others in the GOP. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Stephen Miller, Kirstjen Nielsen, and Pam Bondi have all been accosted, harassed, and even attacked by crazed leftist idiots. Then, to make matters worse, the queen of the idiots, California Democrat Maxine Waters (D-CA) added to insanity when she was heard encouraging her supporters to keep up the radical and dangerous behaviors.
All of this is worrying the more reasonable among the folks in Washington (and around the country).
Richard Haas is the president of the Council on Foreign Relations and he was on MSNBC earlier this week to beg Americans to tone down the rhetoric, and to stop treating each other like second-class citizens just because our politics might be different.
“One of the first landmark pieces of civil rights legislation was the public accommodations, 1964. We fought for the right of Americans to be served, whether it was restaurants or hotels and not to be denied on a list of things. Politics, ironically enough, was not one of them. But what happened the other day violates the spirit of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be focusing on other things. I hear you, but it just seems to me, one. It’s counterproductive. I think your point is the big point.
This is the descent of America into tribalism, and this is dangerous. One of the things we should have learned the last year and a half is we can’t take things for granted in this current country, and things have never gotten bigger than what we can handle in a peaceful way. This makes me uneasy about the trajectory of this country, so I think it’s serious.
I think it comes down to though, the question of how reviewing we’re viewing the trump administration. Is it authoritarianism or is it just a normal presidency? I think that changes how we deal with it and how we look at it and reflect on it.”
